What a month…

Yeah, yeah, I know. I promised an update for the new car, and I never followed up.  So let me run through what has gone on (in no particular order).

Weather – thank FUCK last week is over and done with. 3 days straight of astoundingly hot weather. 43 degrees, followed by 44 the next day, then nearly 46! Record heatwave ever. And that was only in Melbourne. Up north in the country, it was worse. I have no idea what that is in DegreesF, but it was freaking hot. We had the following day (after that lot) at about 35 degrees. Normally we would have said that is a hot day. But after the previous 3 days, it was positively cool!!

Because of the drought and water restrictions, the grass is dead, many plants in the garden are near death (if not already gone). Axl barely survived, as he flat out refuses to come inside anymore (I have no idea why – something has changed and it has freaked him out totally). So I made sure he had plenty of water, and made sure when I got home from work I wetted him down to cool him off. Now normally you pour water on a cat and end up in hospital requiring a blood transfusion. Not this time. Axl squealed for a moment, then realised that it felt cold, so he let me drench him. I swear I saw him actually smile at me!!

The car : I decided to trade in the ol’ Ford AU2 model Falcon. There were a few things going wrong with it (switches not working any more, power windows jamming, etc). I checked out what the going trade-in rate for the old car was, and it came in at about $2k.

I spent a few days cleaning up the old car (including scrubbing the engine to make it look clean andwent to a Ford dealership on the otherside of town on a bit of whim (although I kinda knew what I wanted), and expected them to only offer $2k or less. Guess the clean up paid off, they offered $4550!

I found a car that suited what I wanted, excluding dual-fuel. Close enough! It drives very well, has most of the options I want, RACV tested and approved. And at a good price. Done and Done.

Sadly, things haven’t beenas smooth since then. Fucking Used Car salesmen. Promise the earth, deliver dirt.

1/ To get the car converted to dual-fuel, the caryard were going to give me a cheque for the cost of the conversion, taken off the equity I had in the trade-in. Well, I had to chase that cheque for nearly 2 weeks before they handed it over.

2/ The Government is handing out a $2,000 rebate on the cost of the dual-fuel conversion. However, to qualify, the car has to be in my name. With the conversion booked in for this Tuesday, I called VicRoads, only to find out the car yard still hadn’t transferred ownership to me! Lucky I found out when I did or I would have been out $2k! A few pretty forceful phone calls later, the transfer was completed.

3/ For the dual-fuel conversion, the car yard promised me a loan car while the conversion was done. I dropped the car down to the yard yesterday morning, only to find that no one knew about the loan car. So the one sales guy (not the one I had previosly been dealing with) called my sales guy, and gave him what-for, plenty of four letter words flying, all right in front of me. I snapped and told him to pull his head in, I don’t need to hear this crap. What ever the personality clash he had with his coworker, it wasn’t my problem. I finally got this little buzzbox called a Ford Focus (all the power of a wind-up matchbox car, and as much room iside).

Well, after all that, I picked up the newly converted car. And the job the guy has done looks great, and runs very well. I may move the LPG/ULP switch in the future, but int he meantime, I am now saving 2/3rds my fuel bills! I filled up both tanks tonight. ULP : 112.9c/L (with discount voutcher), LPG : 39.9c/L. W00T!

I promise photos soon. I have them, just need to upload them. I’ll try and get it doen tomorrow, along with a work update.

So much for THAT theory..

Well, I thought that WP 2.7 was coming the other day, but it turns out that it was for wordpress.com users, not for outside users. The best laid plans of mice and men :-)

I have updated to WP 2.7 RC1, and it looks good. I didn’t loose anything throught he update process this time (unlike my last update where I screwed something up bigtime, but thankfully had a backup so it didn’t take too long to recover).

I haven’t had much time to play around with the site, I’ve been flat out at work. The way things are shaping up I may not be able to do too much until after Christmas, when the company practically shuts down for a while. I’ll be at home, but on call.

I’m trying to book in some leave in the very early new year, but haven’t been able to get confirmation yet. I desperately need a break, time to recharge. I will have long service leave owing to me in February, but I’ve already been told I’m not allowed to take that in one hit (8 weeks) until at least May. This despite the fact that I have given them 6 months notice that it was coming up.

I was really looking forward to that long service leave, and I’m devistated that they have put the brakes on it. What worries me is come May when I ask to take it, they will find some other excuse to block me again. And I’ll end up in a never ending cycle of applying and being denied for some other tiny reason.

Anyone home??

You may have noticed a distinct lack of updates recently. Well, okay, not that there is much here anyways, I realise.

I’ve been tinkering around the edges, trying out things here and there, adding some new plugins (particularly seeing I can get some of my photos up on Flickr and having them display here in a way I like – no luck so far). It’s coming along slowly, starting to shape up, but I still have a lot of learning to do.

But the main reason for the delay? WordPress 2.7 is coming out tomorrow, so I’m holding for that. One of the features I’m really looking forward to is the auto updating! The last time I updated WP, I managed to loose everything. Luckily I had backed everything up just in case, so it didn’t take long to restore. Hopefully this new update will be the last one I do manually!

Mayhem

Ever had one of those days when you just KNEW you shouldn’t have gotten out of bed?

That was yesterday for me. From the moment I sat down, the phone didn’t stop ringing. Call after call. Non stop. Barely any time to breathe.

I haven’t had a day like that for years.

I need a holiday…

New site, New blog, New Whinge!

Finally, I’ve shifted “thespydersweb.net” domain over to it’s own specific site. There are some who remember the old domain it used to be pointed to – I ask that you keep that old name to yourselves.

One of the reasons for the shift is that I can now try to remain a little anonymous on the web, and gain a bit of freedom on what I post and what I say.

Please bear with me as I start to get this site under construction. I’ve not used WordPress to any great degree, so it’s going to take me a while to figure out what options I have available. Any comments in respect to the site look, layout, improvement suggestions, etc., are always welcome (note : spammers will be treated with the (lack of) respect they are due).

Anyways, to get started, work is driving me mad. I have a new guy that I have to train up to my level. He’s a very nice guy, and really on the ball. But I have to dump 2 years of information to him in a structured way so as I don’t miss anything. WHILST still doing everything else I have have to do. No taking the entire day to deliver a planned training session. Nope, I have to fit it in around everything else.  FUCK ME!

Today was the perfect example. We’re about to implement a new system, and I had part 1 of the training telconference this morning. 3 hours. Straight.

That finished at 1pm. At 1pm, the NEXT teleconference on a different subject begins. And in amongst this, answering emails, instant messages and mobile phone calls.

How this new guy is going to get trained (up to my level is the expectation), I’m starting to wonder. I hope he’s a sponge….
